The Necessity of Communal Third Spaces

Recently I came to the realization that most people spend their time outside of work and home life at places such as clubs or bars. While I’m not here to drag individuals who enjoy doing that, it is apparent in the United States at least, that there are very few places that are catered for people to socialize.

Just look at how coffee chains such as Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks now are building stores that have minimal seating and are only catered for togo orders. We live in a society that prioritizes productivity and efficiency for capital gain and as a result we collectively are losing key components of life such as community spaces, or what sociologists refer to as third spaces.

Third spaces are locations outside of the workspace or home that assist people to  engage in social interactions. The benefits of these spaces are outstanding as it helps people to build their individual and collective identity. Hence, a part of the human experience is lost when people do not have access to third spaces.

That is why at And That’s OK, we aim to improve our community here in Los Angeles with our inclusive wellness classes. Not only do our events bring healing through activities such as yoga, sound bath, dancing, and artistic creativity they also provide people with a positive third space in which they can socialize and relax.
